This lesson can be used a refresher or reminder to students and families about how we need to continue working together to achieve reconciliation within our nation. LESSON #4 - Decho & Dechinta

This week we would like to invite you to learn about the Decho and Dechinta Bush University! Decho is a Dene word that means "big river" and Dechinta is another Dene word that means "bush". In 2018, CBC collaborated with Dechinta on a documentary which speaks to land-based learning, language revitalization, and decolonization. This lesson can be shared amongst all grades but it is better suited for intermediate and high school students. LESSON #3 - Tłįcho K'ielà: The Dogrib Birchbark Canoe Project

This week we would like to invite you to learn about birchbark art and birchbark canoes! The three buttons on the left will bring you to some materials that you can share with your students and their families. COVID Tip: "Late spring or early summer is the best time to harvest birchbark. It is easier to peel when the sap is running and the moisture is just right. A vertical cut about three feet long is made in the tree and a ring of bark is carefully peeled from around the tree." If you're interested in learning how to harvest birchbark ask an Elder as there are protocols on doing this work." |
